Cricket West Cup Results
Mon, 19 Jan 2009THE North Suburban Cricket Association defeated Perth Cricket Association in two out of three grades in inter-association competition at the weekend.
The Seniors won by 41 runs in the final match of the season played in excellent conditions at Charles Riley Reserve.
Landsdale right-hand batsman Luke Edwards was the star of the day, top-scoring with a typically elegant 58. Quinns Rocks left-hander Steve De Fillipis formed the back-bone of the innings, scoring a valuable half-century opening the batting.
PCA were never in the hunt during the run chase, after a fiery opening spell from Wanneroo’s Gordon Cameron. Bowling with the aid of a strong breeze, Cameron hit the PCA’s right-hand opening batsman twice on the helmet. His fiery spell made life uncomfortable for run scoring as the PCA batsman thought twice about playing off the front foot.
Spinners John Braid Jnr and Richard Burlinson also had good games, conceding just 50 runs off twenty overs while taking four wickets between them. Having gone through the season undefeated, the Seniors are now at short odds to play in the grand-final on February 22.It was the team’s third win for the Cricket West season out of four games, with the match against Swan Helena ending in a rain affected draw.
NSCCA president Tim Park said it would be a great effort from skipper John Braid and his team to make the final. The Seniors last played in the grand-final of the inter-association competition 13 years ago, going down to WASTCA. They have only won the competition once, in the 1991-92 season. WASTCA has dominated the competition, winningg the past five titles and eight of the last ten.
Xavier Deering’s colt team also had a big win by a thumping 197 runs. The victory was set up by team captain Daniel Sadik scoring a magnificent 140. The win gave the cots a 2-2 record for the season and an outside chance of making the finals. A finals berth will depend on the results of other matches. The Association is the defending champions in the Colt’s competition.
The Veterans fielded a more representative side but were unable to win, going down to PCA by 72 runs.
