Sutton's seven sinks SMCA

Tue, 9 Feb 2010

THE North Suburban Community Cricket Association had a resounding win over the South Metropolitan Cricket Association in the Cricket West Cup Seniors competition last weekend, thanks to a record performance from Kingsley Woodvale left-arm medium-pacer, Brad Sutton.

The Veterans also had a win, but unfortunately the Colts were again beaten by a better side on the day.

The Seniors and Veterans are now a chance to play in this year's grand-finals, which will be known when the WACA finalise results.

Sutton took 7-47 in a phenomenal performance that included a wicket with the last delivery of his ten over spell.

He bowled unchanged from the city end at Breckler Park, extracting notable seam and bounce off a lively surface.

The win was set up when the NSCCA batted first and scored 195, thanks to a typically flamboyant 84 off 97 balls from Wanneroo opening batsman, Colin Rose.

Rose flayed the bowling and had his share of luck, and received good support from Greenwood all-rounder Richard Burlinson (25) and Sorrento-Duncraig skipper, Jamie Sajich (22).

Rose was the backbone of the NSCCA Innings, while Burlinson chipped in with a useful late order innings.

The SMCA struggled in the run chase, as Sutton maintained pressure in the process of taking the first seven-wicket haul of his career.

Although statistics are not kept for the Inter-association competition, long-time observers suggested Sutton’s seven-wicket bag was the best individual effort by a NSCCA/WCA bowler, since the Association started in the competition in 1984-85.

In recognition of the feat, the NSCCA will mount the match-ball on a special trophy and present it to Sutton at the end of year wind-up on Saturday May 1, at the Wanneroo Sports & Recreation Club.

Osborne Park opening bowler Ryan Walton also performed well with the ball, taking 2-22 from five overs, while team captain John Braid Jnr claimed 1-9 from his 4.4 overs.
