Sorrento-Duncraig big winners in 2008-09

Thu, 26 Mar 2009

SORRENTO-Duncraig scooped the pool in this year’s grand finals, taking out the A Grade and B Grade premierships for the North Suburban Community Cricket Association.

The A Grade title was won after the Vikings nailed a hard fought six-wicket victory over Joondalup-Kinross, while the B Grade flag was secured with a 107 run win over Kallaroo.

Left-armer Rick Tyson was the star performer in the A Grade grand final with miserly match figures of 8-26.

The low scoring contest, on a bowling friendly wicket at Robin Reserve, saw 34 wickets fall for only 343 runs.

The top score of the match was a gutsy 46not out from Sorrento-Duncraig left-hand middle-order batsman, Darryn Smith.

Sorrento-Duncraig president Glen Hinkley said the club’s 10th year in existence had proved to be its best yet, both on and off field.

On the field, the club competed in six grand-finals, winning four of them.

They won the quinella of A Grade and B Grade flags in the season proper.

A feat not realised for almost thirty years in the competition. The last and only other club to do it was Wanneroo, in the 1980-81 and 1981-82 seasons.

Hinkley said it was a phenomenal achievement to win the title in both A and B Grade, and showed just how much depth there was at his club.

“Coupled with the one day finals in A and E Grade, it was a rich vein of form our club was in this season,” he said.

“The A Grade were crowned grade champions, and although our E Grade and Paragon Training League Division Two sides both finished as grade champions also, they unfortunately could not finish the season as premiers.

“Regardless of that final result, both teams had fantastic seasons and will be better for the experience in 2009/10.

“We have also won the club championship for the 5th time in 10 seasons, an honour all of us at the club are extremely proud of.”

In other results, Edgewater b Yanchep to win D Grade, Wanneroo got up to beat Sorrento-Duncraig in E Grade after losing on the first innings, Ballajura defeated North Beach in F Grade, and in G Grade, West Coast snatched a nail-biting grand-final by one wicket, over Edgewater.

No scores were submitted from the second week of the C Grade grand final between Warwick and Kingsley Woodvale.

All grand final winners and individual champions will be acknowledged at the NSCCA end of season wind up, on May 2.

The association is also compiling a yearbook, summarising the season, that will be handed on the day.
